Presidents of Belarus, Azerbaijan to hold talks in Baku

BAKU, 21 November (BelTA) – President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko will hold talks with his Azerbaijani counterpart in Baku on 21 November. The Belarusian head of state arrived on an official visit to Azerbaijan on 20 November, BelTA has learnt.

The two leaders will meet one-on-one first and then hold an extended attendance meeting. The parties are expected to sign bilateral documents aimed at boosting cooperation ties in diverse fields.

On 20 November Alexander Lukashenko and Ilham Aliyev took part in the official opening ceremony of a new building of the Belarusian embassy in Azerbaijan. The new building is located in one of the most prestigious districts of Baku. The national anthems of the two countries were played during the ceremony and the state flag of Belarus was hoisted on the flagstaff of the embassy. After that the two presidents cut a symbolic red ribbon.

Alexander Lukashenko and Ilham Aliyev were given a tour of the new building and planted two olive trees nearby. The heads of state were shown an exposition of Belarusian machinery assembled at Ganja Automobile Plant.

Azerbaijan is Belarus’ important trading partner. Trade between two countries increased six times from 2006 to 2012 to reach $223.3 million in 2012. In January-September 2013, bilateral trade reached $216 million. Belarusian exports rose 1.6 times.

One of the important areas of bilateral interaction is industrial cooperation. Azerbaijan assembles Belarusian tractors, trucks, machinery, optical equipment and lamps, elevators.
