Nomination of local election candidates concludes in Belarus

MINSK, 8 February (BelTA) – The nomination of candidates seeking a seat at the local councils of deputies is concluding in Belarus on 10 February, BelTA has learnt.

According to the latest data provided by the Central Election Commission, some 16,754 candidates have been nominated in Belarus. Among the nominees are over 8,200 incumbent deputies, nearly 8,000 women, 826 people under 30 and 21 Russian nationals.

By now, most of the candidates are representatives of the education, culture, science and healthcare sectors (4,930) and agriculture (3,799). The nominees include 412 pensioners and 117 unemployed.

In line with the Belarusian electoral laws, candidates can be put forward by means of signature collection, by labor collectives and political parties. Potential candidates can use one, two or three ways of nomination at a time.

The registration of candidates will take place on 11-20 February. Candidates will be able to start campaigning from the moment of registration up to 22 March. The election day is scheduled for 23 March.
