Myasnikovich lays out five proposals for cooperation with CORLEAP

Chairman of Belarus’ Council of the Republic Mikhail Myasnikovich meets with Markku Markkula, President of the European Committee of the Regions (CoR)

MINSK, 22 May (BelTA) – Chairman of Belarus’ Council of the Republic Mikhail Myasnikovich laid out five proposals for cooperation with the Conference of Regional and Local Authorities for the Eastern Partnership (CORLEAP) as he met with Markku Markkula, President of the European Committee of the Regions (CoR), in Minsk on 22 May, BelTA has learned.

“I suggest we organize a Belarus-themed exhibition in the CoR. This is a very serious and responsible matter for Belarus, and we have something to show to our partners in the European Union,” Mikhail Myasnikovich noted.

He said that the Belarusian side is also interested in getting assistance from the CoR with the development of interregional ties between Belarus and the EU member states. “We already have certain contacts and achievements, but a positive signal from the CoR would be of great help to us. Although we are not a member of the EU, not even a candidate [for EU membership], we would do our best to use this opportunity,” Mikhail Myasnikovich emphasized.

The official believes that the CORLEAP Bureau should take note of Belarus’ dedicated efforts to boost energy efficiency. He pointed out that Belarus has achieved considerable results in this field over the past ten years. With this in mind, Mikhail Myasnikovich said it would be a good idea to hold a workshop on energy efficiency and energy conservation for experts from the CoR and the Eastern Partnership countries (with Belarus’ participation).

Mikhail Myasnikovich noted that the fifth proposal was of a systemic nature. He said that Belarus’ active cooperation should not cease once the country’s role as a co-chair of CORLEAP is over in October 2016-September 2017. “We would like to be invited to attend meetings of relevant commissions that deal with the matters of local self-government. We can update our EaP colleagues on the work that is done in our country,” Mikhail Myasnikovich said.

Minsk hosted a meeting of the CORLEAP Bureau on 22 May. Belarus is represented in CORLEAP by the Council for Cooperation of Local Self-Government Bodies at the Council of the Republic.
