Minsk to host international conference on Chernobyl on 25 April

MINSK, 20 April (BelTA) - The international conference dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster will be held in Minsk on 25 April, spokesperson for the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dmitry Mironchik told a press briefing, BelTA has learned.

The conference titled as Thirty Years After Chernobyl. From Emergency to Revival and Sustainable Socio-Economic Development of Affected Territories has been organized by the Belarusian Government and the UN Development Program. Attending the event will be representatives of the government, the state administration bodies, the Belarusian public and also foreign partners of Belarus.

The speakers at the conference will be Administrator of the UN Development Programme Helen Clark. Among the guests will be representatives of Russia and Ukraine, the Order of Malta, partners from Japan, Sweden, Ireland, the UK, Austria, Italy, and also representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Minsk. The conference will also attended by representatives of international organizations, including the IAEA, World Bank, the OSCE, and the UN agencies.

It is planned that the conference will adopt a declaration which will be the starting point for the new stage in Chernobyl cooperation under the UN auspices focusing on partnership, innovation and investment in the affected areas.

Administrator of the UN Development Programme Helen Clark will be in Belarus on a visit on 24-25 April. She will also take part in a ceremony to unveil a commemorative plaque on school No. 130 in Minsk for Ruth Waller who worked for the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) in Belarus in 1946.

Ms Helen Clark will be also presented the Francysk Skaryna Order in recognition of her significant personal contribution to the development of cooperation between the Republic of Belarus and the United Nations to ensure comprehensive rehabilitation and sustainable development of the regions affected by the Chernobyl disaster.
