Minsk to host conference on CIS common education space

MINSK, 11 January (BelTA) – The CIS Plenipotentiaries Council is expected to gather in Minsk on 12 January for its first session in 2017 to discuss common education space in the CIS, BelTA learned from the press service of the CIS Executive Committee.

The CIS plenipotentiaries are set to discuss the activity of the CIS Council on Education Cooperation as part of the efforts to develop common education space in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). According to the press service, the council comprises heads of state agencies in charge of education matters, and also bodies responsible for the performance review of scientific and educational personnel in the CIS countries. The council works to boost comprehensive cooperation in the education sector, assist in preparing and carrying out the performance reviews of scientific and educational staff. The council is responsible for cooperation with international, regional, and national educational associations, and also the popularization of the CIS experience in the development of national education systems.

The CIS plenipotentiaries are expected to approve the plan of action for 2017, and discuss the prospects of the CIS legal framework in 2017, during which 49 draft documents are to be considered by the CIS supreme bodies. Tajikistan’s Permanent Representative in the CIS statutory and other bodies, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to Belarus Kozidavlat Koimdodov will inform the colleagues about the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development” 2018-2028 approved by the UN General Assembly.

The CIS Executive Committee noted that since the founding the CIS Plenipotentiaries Council has held 29 meetings. On its initiative the CIS Council of Heads of Government has adopted over 40 documents. Most of the documents are in use in the CIS states. Vladimir Filippov, the head of the CIS Plenipotentiaries Council, the chairman of the Higher Attestation Commission of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science, will make a detailed report on this matter.

The meeting, which will be chaired by Russian plenipotentiary representative Andrei Shvedov will be attended by Chairman of the Executive Committee -CIS Executive Secretary Sergei Lebedev. It is expected that Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei will speak before the members of the council.
