Makei urges diplomats to step up work in CIS

MINSK, 23 May (BelTA) – Belarus’ Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei called on Belarusian diplomats to intensify their work in Russia and other CIS member states, as well as in some countries of Africa and America. Vladimir Makei made this statement on 23 May at an extended session attended by trade advisors of Belarusian embassies accredited in the CIS, Africa and America, BelTA has learnt.

“I am concerned about our work on the markets of Russia and other CIS member states, as well as in some countries of Africa and America. Our trade advisors spent this week thinking about possible solutions and ways to fulfill the targets,” the Foreign Minister said.

Vladimir Makei reminded that one of the major objectives of the Belarusian government in 2011-2015 and the national export promotion program in the same period is to get a $500 million trade surplus in goods and services in 2015. The minister emphasized that Belarus’ export has been declining for the second year consecutive. In 2013 the export of goods and services dropped compared to 2012 and even 2011. “Calculations suggest that in order to fulfill the targets stipulated by the national export promotion program, Belarus should expand its export by at least 23% in 2014 and 2015, which is nearly three times higher than the targets set for this year,” Vladimir Makei said.

Therefore, the Foreign Ministry resumed its meetings with Belarusian diplomats supervising matters related to foreign trade and foreign investments at Belarusian diplomatic missions aboard. “We resumed this practice, because we believe we need to communicate our views directly and update our foreign diplomatic missions about the state of affairs and issues in various economic sectors,” the Foreign Minister said.
