Makei to attend UN high-level events in New York

MINSK, 20 April (BelTA) – Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei will take part in high-level events that are due to take place at the UN headquarters in New York on 20-22 April, spokesman for the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dmitry Mironchik told a briefing on 20 April, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Makei will chair at the meeting of the UN Eastern European Regional Group that comprises 23 states. One of the issues high on the agenda is the election of the new Secretary General of the organization.

On the same day the Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs will speak at a special session of the UN General Assembly on the world drug problem and present Belarus’ position on international cooperation in the fight against drugs distribution. The minister will also open a photo exhibition in the UN headquarters to mark the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident.

On 21 April the Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs will speak at the UNGA high level thematic debate on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Vladimir Makei will also take part in the official ceremony of signing the Paris Climate Change Agreement on 22 April. Belarus approved the document together with 195 countries at the 21st Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (in Paris on 12 December 2015).

The Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs will also speak at a plenary session of the UN General Assembly on the implementation of the abovementioned agreement and talk about the implementation of the national action plan on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, present Belarus’ proposals on further international efforts in climate change.
