Makei presides over CSTO ministerial meeting in New York

MINSK, 21 September (BelTA) – Belarus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei presided over a working meeting of the foreign ministers of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) member states on the sidelines of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly on 20 September 2017. CSTO Secretary General Yuri Khachaturov took part in the meeting, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The ministers of foreign affairs discussed the coordination of interaction on the issues on the international agenda, including during the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly. Following the meeting the ministers signed three joint statements: “On fight against international terrorism”, “On ensuring comprehensive stability in the world”, “On the situation in Afghanistan and the threat of international terrorist and extremist organizations strengthening their positions in the northern provinces of the country”.

On the same time Vladimir Makei attended the ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement held in the UN headquarters. The meeting was dedicated to the policy of unilateral coercive measures and the ways to challenge it. During the meeting Vladimir Makei presented the position of the Republic of Belarus on the unacceptability of the unilateral coercive measures policy which runs contrary to the norms and principle of the international law. The ministers adopted a joint statement.

As part of the events of the high-level segment of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly, Vladimir Makei also took part in the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) Conference. The Belarusian minister expressed full support for international efforts to ban nuclear testing and achieve nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament. The participants adopted the final declaration calling for further international efforts to facilitate the early entry into force of the CTBT.
