Mahinda Rajapaksa invites Andreichenko to visit Sri Lanka

MINSK, 27 August (BelTA) - The House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus hosted a meeting between Chairman of the House of Representatives Vladimir Andreichenko, Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Republic Anatoly Rusetsky and President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa, BelTA learned.

According to Vladimir Andreichenko, Belarus is convinced that the two countries have good prospects for mutually beneficial cooperation. Parliamentary interaction is very important too. Possible future cooperation in providing mutual support in international organizations holds great prospects.

The Chairman of the House of Representatives noted that Belarus was impressed by the achievements of Sri Lanka in recent years, including in the social sector.

Besides, Belarus is interested in the development of relations in science, culture and education. Vladimir Andreichenko said that the Belarus-Sri Lanka Business Forum and Travel Forum will contribute to this. The Chairman of the House of Representatives expressed the hope that the number of tourists from Belarus to Sri Lanka and vice versa will increase

Mahinda Rajapaksa thanked the Belarusian side for the warm welcome. “I would like to invite the chairman to visit our country to more closely examine our parliamentary system,” said the President of Sri Lanka, having in mind the possible visit of Vladimir Andreichenko.

Mahinda Rajapaksa believes that consideration should be given to the creation of the friendship groups in the Belarusian and Sri Lankan parliaments.

Speaking about the situation in the country, Mahinda Rajapaksa recalled that an internal conflict lasted more than 30 years in Sri Lanka. The President assured that the conflict is over and peace has been established in the country. Therefore, it is important for Sri Lanka to develop the territories affected by the conflict.

Sri Lanka is interested in Belarusian technologies, increasing the supplies of tea to Belarus. Another area of cooperation is tourism. In this regard, according to Mahinda Rajapaksa, the direct air service between the two states can play an important role in this.
