MINSK, 3 September (BelTA) – Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has urged to pay utmost attention to the construction and renovation of Belarus’ transit highways. The President made this statement as he visited the construction site of the second ring road around Minsk on 3 September, BelTA has learned.
The head of state noted that in view of the Ukraine developments, Belarus has come to play an even bigger role as a transport corridor connecting the West and East. “If we offer three to four good roads, the demand will be huge and we will make good money on transit. All our investments will pay back. The faster we do it, the better,” the President said.
Alexander Lukashenko reminded that some time ago he set a similar task for the country’s agribusiness. The ultimate goal was to meet the domestic demand for food and to be able to sell a considerable amount of foodstuffs abroad. This decision proved right, in particular, taking into consideration the current situation in the region. Now Belarus-made agricultural produce is in high demand. The President is convinced that the demand will be even stronger in the future.
The President was informed about plans to renovate and build major highways in Belarus in 2015-2019. The total length of the roads under construction and renovation will exceed 400km, including 330km of first-category roads. The President also discussed the renovation of the Bobruisk-Zhlobin section of the Minsk-Gomel highway, construction of a modern highway leading to Grodno and renovation of other road sections. The head of state emphasized the importance of the Gomel-Brest highway as a transit route.
