Lukashenko stresses need for normal relations with EU, United States

MINSK, 22 June (BelTA) – Belarus needs normal relations with the European Union and the United States, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said when speaking at the 5th Belarusian People’s Congress, BelTA has learned.

“In order to develop dynamically, we need normal relations with the European Union and the United States. Our relations have warmed up in recent years. Abandoning the policy of sanctions towards Belarus opens new possibilities in the development of the interaction. It would be a shame not to take advantage of them. We, by and large, need to make up for the losses and catch up with the level of relations that our EEU and CIS partners have with the EU and the United States,” Alexander Lukashenko said.

“What concerns the cooperation with the West, we are primarily interested in investment, technology transfer, advanced joint ventures, participation of Belarusian companies in international value chains and, of course, the export of our products. Belarusian enterprises should adopt all the best from them and take up a worthy place among the world's leading companies specializing in mechanical engineering, power engineering, pharmaceuticals, telecommunications and information technologies,” the President said.

He noted that the European Union is the second most important market for Belarusian export. The constructive diverse cooperation with the EU meets Belarus’ national interests. “The key challenge for the future is to fully normalize the relations and conclude a framework agreement between Belarus and the European Union,” Alexander Lukashenko added.
