MINSK, 19 December (BelTA) - Presidents of Belarus and Ukraine Alexander Lukashenko and Petro Poroshenko will meet on Sunday, 21 December. The Belarusian head of state made this announcement when visiting the State Forensics Committee in Minsk on 19 December, BelTA has learned.
"Most likely we will meet on Sunday. The Ukrainian President called me yesterday and asked for a meeting to talk over some issues. I am all for it because we have a lot to talk about in this situation,” said Alexander Lukashenko.
“Based on that conversation, I understood that the Ukrainian leadership, including the President of Ukraine, is absolutely not against the new round of talks in Minsk,” the Belarusian leader noted. "As he said, he is now waiting for the response from the leaders of the Lugansk and Donetsk republics. If the agreements are reached, they will be able to get together in Minsk to continue the dialogue and see what direction they will move,” the Belarusian President said.
Alexander Lukashenko underlined that the most important thing is dialogue. “However difficult it can be, there is no other way for the President of Ukraine and the heads of Donetsk and Lugansk but to sit down at the negotiating table and engage in a dialogue. They should talk. Peace will eventually come to the country. But escalation and killing of innocent people should be stopped,” the President of Belarus said.
