Lukashenko: Belarusians should be masters of their land

MINSK, 29 December (BelTA) – Belarusians should be masters of their land and must do their best to protect it, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said as he introduced newly-appointed Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov on 29 December, BelTA has learned.

“We should be masters of this land and must do whatever it takes to protect and take care of it,” the head of state stressed. Alexander Lukashenko noted that on 29 December, in the run-up to the New Year celebrations, he visited the rest home for elderly and disabled people. “When visiting the facility I was thinking what we need? We have everything. Belarusians have never had such a good life. I hope that people will understand me,” Alexander Lukashenko noted. He reminded that the post-war period when people had to rebuild the country in the most complicated conditions was very difficult for Belarus.

“Today some people complain that they lack some things. But I insist that if a person wants to live well and to take care of his children and family he has everything for it. What is needed is to work hard,” the President said.

At the same time, he said that there are some people who abuse alcohol, loaf and have a bad life: “A person cannot be a good worker if he does not want to work, does not have proper education, if he is a drinker and smoker. Such people cannot be rich.” The President then asked a rhetorical question: “How can the president and the government make these people wealthy?”

According to the head of state, Belarusians have never wasted money. It is the mentality of our people. There are a lot of ordinary people who work hard to earn extra money, buy discounted products.

I often think that our problem is that we in fact did not have bad times as compared to other members of the former Soviet Union, Alexander Lukashenko said. The President cited Ukraine which is in the middle of a very difficult situation as an example. “People should understand that their wellbeing is, first of all, in their own hands,” the President said.
