Lukashenko: Belarus capable of protecting its sovereignty, territorial integrity

MINSK, 22 June (BelTA) - Belarus is capable of protecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said when speaking at the 5th Belarusian People’s Congress, BelTA has learned.

“We can confidently say that we are able to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country, peace and order in the state,” Alexander Lukashenko said.

According to him, measures have been taken in recent years to ensure the country's border security. “We have to take these measures considering the current situation, particularly on the southern border of our fatherland, and on the western border too. We are implementing a set of measures to improve the system for the protection of state borders, primarily in the southern direction. We have put up new units; we are in the middle of creating an integrated system of border protection, introducing modern samples of weapons and equipment.

“The system we have created is an effective shield against terrorism, drug trafficking and illegal migration,” the Belarusian leader believes. “An equally important goal is to protect the rights and lawful interests of citizens, to fight against crime. Law enforcement agencies note that it is steadily reducing. We are engaged in a fierce fight against drug use and illicit drug trafficking; we are increasing the efficiency of our efforts to counter human trafficking.”

Among other things, the President drew attention to the annual reduction in road traffic injury incidence.
