Lukashenko: A stronger state is in favor after events in Ukraine

MINSK, 3 October (BelTA) – The processes that bolster the role of the state, which is designed to prevent chaos or a civil war, enjoy support at present. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko voiced the opinion in an interview with the TV channel Euronews, BelTA has learned.

“It is unlikely that absolute democracy can exist. The state always has to play a certain role. Once the state stops playing its role in the society, inside the country, stops carrying out its functions, then we get a disaster on our hands and no democracy will save us,” believes Alexander Lukashenko.

“People are fed up with democracy in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and possibly in the West, other countries. Not even democracy but with the lack of control and with debauchery. In France, Germany, and other countries political leaders are starting to understand that something has to be done about it. It is necessary to bolster the role of the state without denying the fundamental principles of democracy such as the election of government authorities,” noted the Belarusian head of state.

“It is an unavoidable fact that people now demand more order in the country, more protection, efforts to prevent civil wars or clashes. It seems to me that these processes are in demand in the West, too,” believes the Belarus President.

“But you cannot escape that understanding of democracy that you have come up with. It is the difference,” Alexander Lukashenko told the reporter.

As far as leaders of the opposition are concerned, the Belarusian head of state made it clear that nobody is above the law, including the government and leaders of the opposition. “If you break the law, you must face the responsibility,” he added.
