Kobyakov urges to use science to address social and economic challenges

фMINSK, 21 January (BelTA) – Belarus Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov instructed to make maximum use of domestic science and technology in solving major social and economic challenges as he presided over a meeting of the commission on state scientific and technical policy at the Council of Ministers, BelTA has learned.

"We must determine how to best utilize the domestic science and technology to address the most important social and economic tasks outlined by the President. The main objective is to increase the competitiveness and export capabilities of enterprises,” said Andrei Kobyakov.

In 2015, the Government approved the lists of state research programs for 2016-2020. "At today's meeting, we need to consider the lists of national and regional research programs for 2016-2020 and, based on their results, to decide which of them will be submitted to the head of state for approval," Andrei Kobyakov noted. He said there is a need to evaluate closely the results of scientific and technological activities in the last five-year period, submit proposals and clear plans of action for the development of this sphere.

"The programs should be aimed at developing innovative products based on the latest domestic and foreign scientific achievements, corresponding to the best world analogues or surpassing them. The share of imports in new technologies should be minimal while the level of added value high,” said the Prime Minister.

The Belarusian head of government stated that the head of state identified specific priorities of scientific and technical activities for 2016-2020. "First and foremost, they are about the development of science and creation of high-tech sectors based on V and VI technological paradigms: IT sector, precision engineering and instrumentation, microelectronics, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. By facilitating the scientific and technological development of these areas we will be able to build an innovative economy,” Minister Andrei Kobyakov concluded.
