EU relations with Belarus are in for qualitative changes

MINSK, 9 December (BelTA) – The European Union is ready for new qualitative changes in its approach to the relations with Belarus, Belarusian Deputy Foreign Minister Yelena Kupchina said in an interview with Radio Belarus, BelTA has learned.

“Frankly speaking, the restrictions or, as we say “sanctions” imposed on Belarus are the main obstacle on the way towards the normalization of our relations with the EU,” Yelena Kupchina emphasized. “I am deeply convinced that if the EU lifts these sanctions, our relations will reach a brand new, positive level very soon,” she added.

Yelena Kupchina pointed out that the development of good-neighborly relations with the EU has always been and remains one of priorities of Belarus’ foreign policy. “In recent years Belarus has been strengthening the dialogue with both the official Brussels and the EU member states. We see that some concrete, albeit small, steps have been made towards the improvement of the relations and gradual development of cooperation in different areas. All this became possible due to the joint work of both sides, Belarus and the European Union,” Yelena Kupchina noted.

She also expressed opinion that the EU has changed the rhetoric because the European partners have realized the need to develop a dialogue based on mutual respect with Belarus which is obviously making a significant contribution to the security and stability in Europe and the world in general.

Yelena Kupchina also emphasized that European businessmen have recently been showing interest in setting up or developing business in Belarus.
