MINSK, 18 October (BelTA) – Belarus will not change the electoral legislation in the run-up to the elections to the House of Representatives of the National Assembly scheduled for 2012, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said as he met with Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina on 18 October, BelTA learnt from the press service of the President.
“I would not consider, as some want it, radical changes to the electoral legislation. It is absolutely unacceptable in the run-up to a political campaign,” the head of state said.
The President agreed that a lot has been done in recent years to streamline the legislation taking into consideration the demands of some international organizations, including the OSCE. Belarus introduced significant amendments to the laws in the run-up to the election to the local councils of deputies in 2010, however, according to Lidia Yermoshina, some amendments made the work of the election commissions more complicated. “We are seeking democratization, while we made things more difficult for the members of the election commission who have nothing to do with politics,” she said.
