Distinguished scientists of Belarus honored

MINSK, 27 January (BelTA) – Prime Minister of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich awarded honorary scientists of Belarus on 24 January. The award ceremony took place at the National Academy of Sciences as part of a solemn meeting to mark the 85th anniversary of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Day of the Belarusian Science, BelTA has learnt.

The PM congratulated the scientific community and presented distinguished scientists with the Honorary Diplomas of the Council of Ministers in recognition of fruitful scientific and pedagogical activity, expansion of international sci-tech cooperation, training of highly-qualified scientific personnel, and the Premier’s Letter of Thanks in recognition of many-year fruitful scientific and pedagogical activity, professionalism and exemplary service.

As the PM stressed in his speech, the Belarusian head of state and the government pay special attention to the Academy of Sciences and scientific development in general. The government supports scientists’ initiatives aimed at higher efficiency of the national innovation system of attracting the youth to the science, implementation of large-scale projects. “Science and innovations are priorities of the Belarusian economic policy,” Mikhail Myasnikovich said.

The Premier made an emphasis on the main issues related to the development of the national science. In particular, scientific organization and the role of investors in the development of the society. Mikhail Myasnikovich noted that he backed the decision of the assembly of the Academy of Sciences to enhance the efficiency of the scientific activity, interconnecting financing with its results.

Special attention was turned to fundamental and applied research. According to the Prime Minister, fundamental research is the scientific capital. In this respect he stressed that Belarus should preserve and develop its advantage in mathematics, physics, biology, thermophysics, genetics and mechanics. The head of government stated that high fundamental science is unable to pay back fast, in one or two years, that is why decisions are often taken to save on this research. Business also shows little interest in this area of science. “Therefore, support and development of the fundamental science is one of top priorities for the state, and we, the government, follow this path,” Mikhail Myasnikovich said. He expressed confidence that an optimal algorithm of financing exploration works will be developed at the second Congress of Scientists of Belarus, which is scheduled for Q1 2014.

“Contemporary science is an asset of the world culture. It is international in nature and is impossible without united efforts,” the Prime Minister emphasized. He added: “I am glad that Belarusian scientists have partners all over the world.”

For instance, an agreement on cooperation in science was reached during the Premier’s visit to China on 19-23 January. The parties agreed to open a Belarusian-Chinese ventures fund which will add effective financial mechanisms to bilateral cooperation. The sides also signed contracts and agreements in science and technologies. “We see mutual advantage in strengthening Belarus-China sci-tech partnership. Belarus has certain hopes for further cooperation with the European Union,” Mikhail Myasnikovich added.

Speaking to foreign scientists who attended the meeting, Mikhail Myasnikovich expressed hope that they would support and develop the partnership and mutually beneficial cooperation between Belarus and their countries.
