Culture ministries of Belarus, Sri Lanka ink cooperation agreement

MINSK, 8 September (BelTA) – The Belarusian Culture Ministry and the Ministry of Culture and Arts of Sri Lanka have signed an interagency agreement on cooperation. The ceremony took place in the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theater of Belarus, BelTA has learned.

The document was signed by Belarusian Culture Minister Boris Svetlov and Sri Lankan Culture and Arts Minister Wijesundara Mudiyanselage Thilakaratna Bandara Ekanayaka.

“It is a framework agreement for now. The creation of a concrete plan for cooperation between culture organizations and institutions of the two countries should be the next step,” remarked Boris Svetlov.

In particular, the document provides for sharing experience between folk craft masters of the two countries, organization of tours and creative meetings for theater artists. Sri Lankan Cinema Days in Belarus will be the first project to be implemented as part of the agreement.

“The agreement opens up opportunities for wide cooperation in the sphere, including in archeology and ethnography. I am convinced that in the near future we will see how friendly ties and cultural cooperation relations between our countries grow stronger,” said Wijesundara Mudiyanselage Thilakaratna Bandara Ekanayaka.

Belarus is expected to host Sri Lankan Culture Days in early September. A Belarusian delegation is expected to go to Sri Lanka on a reciprocal visit in 2015.

Belarus and Sri Lanka established diplomatic relations in 2000. In 2013 the bilateral trade totaled $34.1 million. Sri Lanka buys potash fertilizers while Belarus buys tea, tires, and raw tobacco materials. At present there are over 300 students from Sri Lanka in Belarusian universities, including about 200 students in the Vitebsk State Medical University.
