Constitutional Court: EU sanctions affect Belarus’ national interests

Constitutional Court: EU sanctions affect Belarus’ national interests

MINSK, 15 December (BelTA) – The EU sanctions affect the national interests of Belarus, Chairman of the Constitutional Court Piotr Miklashevich said as he announced the Constitutional Court’s decision on the case “On compliance with generally recognized principles and norms of international law of documents adopted (published) by the European Union and some foreign states and their government bodies on introducing restrictive measures against the Republic of Belarus”, BelTA has learned.

“The Constitutional Court believes that the documents adopted by the European Union and some foreign states in relation to some individuals and legal entities of Belarus complicate the work of these business entities in various sectors of the economy and hamper the implementation of social, economic, and civil rights and freedoms of citizens, which ultimately affects national interests of Belarus,” Piotr Miklashevich said.

The chairman of the Constitutional Court noted that Belarus’ foreign policy proceeds from the equality of states, non-use of force or threat of force, inviolability of borders, peaceful settlement of disputes, non-interference in domestic affairs and other generally recognized principles and norms of international law that guarantee the rights and freedoms of citizens. These rights are enshrined in the Constitution and are stipulated by international commitments obliging states to create the domestic and international conditions necessary for the full exercise of rights and freedoms of citizens of the Republic of Belarus provided for by the Constitution.
