Call to plug brain drain in Belarusian science

MINSK, 13 December (BelTA) – The problem of brain drain in Belarusian science must be resolved. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko made the relevant statement in his speech during the second congress of Belarusian scientists on 13 December, BelTA has learned.

Alexander Lukashenko said it is difficult to evaluate the real scale of the brain drain problem because Belarusian scientists seek gainful employment in the private sector in addition to simply leaving the country. “We should enable the most favorable conditions for the young generation. We should support youthful endeavors,” said the president.

University science has a special role to play. In addition to education and scientific research Belarusian universities should promote their R&D results into the production sector and other spheres. The University 3.0 model is already being assimilated to make it happen, pointed out Alexander Lukashenko.

The head of state encouraged the central government, the parliament and the scientific community to ensure the unity of education, science, and manufacturing. If the production sector does not want innovations, then there will be no demand for new R&D and highly qualified personnel, noted the head of state. The role of university science looks as important for planning personnel training, including top scientific qualifications, taking into account long-term prospects of advancement of science and technology.

Apart from bringing young Belarusians into science it is necessary to keep them there, stressed Alexander Lukashenko. Decent salaries are needed for that. The housing problem should be resolved. Interesting areas to research for the benefit of the state, teams of likeminded persons, mentoring, and as little red tape as possible will be helpful.
