The visit of a delegation of the State Border Committee of Belarus to Latvia was held on 12-13 October. Chairman of the State Border Committee Anatoly Lappo and Head of the State Border Guard of Latvia Normunds Garbars took stock of the progress made in the implementation of the joint action plan for 2017 and discussed further cooperation prospects. The parties expressed readiness to enhance the level of cooperation between the operative units in the fight against cross-border criminality. The heads of the two agencies signed a protocol on cooperation between the operative units of the State Border Guard of Latvia and the Belarusian border service.

“The heads also discussed the situation on the border between the two states. The major challenges this year have been the attempts of border crossing by illegal migrants and cigarette smuggling,” the State Border Committee said.

Anatoly Lappo and Normunds Garbars attached close attention to the implementation of joint projects of international technical assistance.

The program also included a visit of the Belarusian delegation to the Daugavpils department of the State Border Guard of Latvia, the Daugavpils Accommodation Centre for Detained Foreigners and a section of the joint border.
