Belarusians’, Russians’ travel freedom unaffected by Russian measures at Belarusian-Russian border

MOSCOW, 31 March (BelTA) – The measures Russia is taking at the Belarusian-Russian border have no effect on the freedom of movement of citizens of the two countries, BelTA learned from State Secretary of the Union State of Belarus and Russia Grigory Rapota during a Moscow-Minsk video conference on 31 March.

Grigory Rapota said: “The absence of borders, freedom of travels for citizens represent some of the key accomplishments of the Union State of Belarus and Russia. None of the actions currently being taken at the border has an effect on the freedom of movement for citizens of Belarus and Russia.”

The official noted that the issue had been raised due to third-country citizens crossing the Belarusian-Russian border. In his words, there are some legislative loopholes that need to be addressed. In particular, the intergovernmental working group on forming the common migration space intends to take a look at the situation in April.

“The problem does exist. It needs to be solved but, let me make it absolutely clear, it is a problem for citizens of third countries,” concluded Grigory Rapota.
