Belarusian, Russian foreign ministers discuss situation in Ukraine

MINSK, 16 June (BelTA) – The situation in Ukraine was discussed during negotiations between Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, BelTA learned from the Russian Foreign Minister after the talks.

“We spent some time talking about the state of affairs in Ukraine. The brotherly Ukrainian nation is living through a tragic period. We are interested in stopping the bloodshed as soon as possible and in starting a mutually respectful nationwide dialogue involving and taking into account interests of all regions of the country in accordance with the Geneva Statement of 17 April and the roadmap for Swiss presidency in the OSCE that has been developed on the basis of the document,” said Sergei Lavrov.

In light of the recent events including “the nauseating attack on the Russian embassy,” the Russian Foreign Minister underlined that the international community needs to pay attention to the task of taming ultra-radical forces, extremists and neo-Nazis. “We expect reason to prevail. Everyone able to influence the situation should work to get it resolved by political instruments while the military operation has to stop immediately,” he said.

Sergei Lavrov stated that Russia will take additional security measures. He mentioned that in accordance with international norms it is the host country that is primarily responsible for the safety of diplomatic missions.

The Russian Foreign Minister also spoke about sanctions. “Russia and Belarus hold the view that the policy of unilateral sanctions is unacceptable and counterproductive in the international scene. We will continue speaking in various international bodies against this vicious practice”.
