Belarusian intellectual elite urged to focus on resolution of topical issues

MINSK, 13 December (BelTA) – The intellectual elite of the society should focus on the resolution of topical issues, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said at the 2nd Congress of Scientists of Belarus on 13 December, BelTA learned.

According to the president, the main objective is the same: to strengthen the scientific and technical potential of the country and to speed up the application of R&D achievements in the real production sector. “Therefore, a decision was made to declare the Year of Science in Belarus in 2017. We wanted to mobilize the scientific community and give more dynamics to innovative development. Now we can evaluate the results in an objective and comprehensive way, discuss the current state of affairs in science, and make key decisions to promote its efficiency,” the head of state said.

He stressed that the attention of the state to efficient R&D work will not weaken after 2017. “This year should be a new starting point and a stimulus for boosting the innovative potential and the enhancement of the role of science in all walks of life. This was the main reason for holding our forum,” Alexander Lukashenko continued. “Belarus’ scientific potential is a big productive force in the society. We have made considerable achievements, I have already mentioned some of them.”

The president recalled that in April 2017 he instructed the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the government to pay more attention to science, including in such fields as financing, remuneration for scientists, factors of stimulation, etc. “I hope it will give a new impulse to your work. Responsible goals are ahead of you,” Alexander Lukashenko remarked.

The president said he was disappointed by the fact that not all the plans made at the 1st Congress of Scientists were fulfilled. Therefore, today it will ne essential to analyze the unsolved issues once again.
