Belarus, Vietnam update economic cooperation program for 2013-2015

MINSK, 10 September (BelTA) - An updated program for economic cooperation between the Republic of Belarus and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam for 2013-2015 was signed during the session of the Belarusian-Vietnamese intergovernmental commission for trade, economic and R&D cooperation held in Minsk on 10 September, BelTA has learnt.

The updated program includes the projects devised following the visit of the Vietnamese Prime Minster to Belarus in May 2013.

The Belarusian part of the commission is headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Valentin Rybakov, while the Vietnamese part by Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Le Duong Quang. The session on 10 September discussed cooperation in industry, agriculture, food production, pharmacy, science, technologies and other areas. The sides also approved a final protocol.

Valentin Rybakov noted that the joint intergovernmental commission has started meeting on a yearly basis, and thanks to this the Belarusian-Vietnamese cooperation in trade, economic and R&D has been raised onto a qualitatively new level. Since the previous session of the commission held in Hanoi in November 2012 several problems have been high on bilateral agenda and they required in-depth analysis and decisions. Valentin Rybakov reaffirmed Belarus and Vietnam’s commitment to cooperation.

For his part, Le Duong Quang stressed that the two countries have a great potential for cooperation. The major objective at the current stage is to find opportunities for the implementation of the projects and specify forms of further activities.

The Socialist Republic of Vietnam is Belarus’ major partner in Southeast Asia. Foreign trade between the two countries in January-December 2012 totaled $184.7 million (down 1.8% as against the same period in 2011). Belarus’ export was $156.1 million (down 5%), with import being $28.5 million (up 19.8%). Belarus posted trade surplus of $127.6 million. In January-July 2013 Belarus’ export to Vietnam amounted to $90.6 million.
