Belarus, United States agree to continue human rights dialogue

MINSK, 18 December (BelTA) – A delegation of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a number of meetings with representatives of the U.S. government bodies in Washington DC, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The Belarusian delegation which comprised Head of the America Office of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Oleg Kravchenko, Deputy Director of Global Policy and Humanitarian Cooperation Department Irina Velichko, Charge d'Affaires ad Interim of Belarus in the U.S. Pavel Shidlovsky, and also representatives of the Central Election Commission, Justice Ministry, Office of the Prosecutor General and National Center of Legislation and Legal Studies had meetings with Deputy Assistant Secretary of State of the U.S. for European and Eurasian Affairs Bridget Brink, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State of the U.S. for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Robert Berschinski, Deputy Assistant Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development Jonathan Katz and other representatives of the U.S. Department of State to discuss human rights,” the ministry said.

“The parties agreed to continue human rights dialogue, including the discussion of contentious human rights issues in the U.S. and Belarus,” the ministry added. Issues regarding human rights in the context of rule of law were discussed by the Belarusian delegation in the Department of Justice and Supreme Court of the U.S., the District of Columbia Office of Human Rights, the American Bar Association and International Foundation for Electoral Systems.

Meetings were organized with the assistance of the UN/UNDP Office in Belarus.
