Belarus, Ukraine to discuss situation on boundary demarcation

MINSK, 8 April (BelTA) – Belarus and Ukraine will hold talks on the draft intergovernmental agreement on the confirmation of the provision on the demarcation of the state border between Belarus and Ukraine. The Council of Ministers of Belarus has authorized the State Border Committee to hold the negotiations, according to Council of Ministers’ Resolution No.308 of 4 April 2014, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Belarusian government.

The provision approves the abovementioned draft agreement “as a basis for holding talks”. The State Border Committee is authorized not only to sign the document but also to amend the agreement if necessary.

On 13 November 2013 Dobrush District hosted the ceremony of unveiling the first border marker on the Belarus-Ukraine border. Attending the ceremony were the foreign ministers of Belarus and Ukraine, heads of the border committees, local authorities of the border areas and other officials. The foreign ministers solemnly cut the symbolic ribbon to unveil the border marker. The heads of the border committees attached the coats of arms to the border markers. A time capsule was laid.

Commenting on the boundary demarcation works, Chairman of the State Border Committee of Belarus Leonid Maltsev stated on 2 April that everything was “on schedule”. There were no halts in this work. All the factors that hinder demarcation are financial issues. According to the head of the State Border Committee, the length of the border is 1,084km.
