Belarus to call presidential election by 20 August 2015

MINSK, 28 March (BelTA) – The presidential election in Belarus is to be announced by 20 August 2015, Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina told reporters on 28 March, BelTA has learnt.

The inauguration of the incumbent President took place in mid-January 2011. It was when the head of state assumed office. “The new election should be conducted two months before the term of office of the incumbent president expires, i.e. not later than 20 November 2015,” Lidia Yermoshina explained.

The election campaign lasts for three months. “If the election is to be held by 20 November, it means the election day should be announced by 20 August,” the CEC Chairperson said.

Lidia Yermoshina told reporters about the new rules of conducting the election campaign. Campaign funds can be established before those who seek the top job will be officially registered as presidential candidates. When campaign funds are set up, the participants of the election race will be able to pay for their expenses. The limit on campaign funds of presidential candidates was increased from 3,000 to 9,000 base amounts (now one base amount equals Br130,000).
