Belarus-Sudan agreement on cooperation in science, technology nearly ready

MINSK, 22 April (BelTA) – Belarus and Sudan are about to finish the preparation of the intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the area of science and technologies. Chairman of the State Science and Technology Committee of Belarus Alexander Shumilin made the statement as he met with Chairperson of the African Union Commission Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma on 22 April, BelTA has learned.

Belarus has already signed similar agreements with Egypt and South Africa. The Committee’s press service quoted Alexander Shumilin as saying: “The preparation of the intergovernmental agreement on cooperation with Sudan in the area of science and technologies is nearing completion. The formation of the legal base on bilateral cooperation in the area of science and technologies with Zimbabwe, Burkina Faso, and Morocco is under consideration.”

The Chairman of the State Science and Technology Committee of Belarus noted that it is necessary to step up bilateral R&D cooperation with African countries and move it into the practical dimension. “Proposals in the spheres of industry, agriculture, healthcare, including in the area of medical instrument-making and pharmaceutics, as well as transport infrastructure projects are of mutual interest,” said the official.

In turn, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission said that innovative products and R&D accomplishments of Belarus represent a real interest and will be in demand in countries of the African Union. “Belarusian science has a huge potential and a strong competitive ability. The list of technologies and accomplishments in healthcare, agriculture, mechanical engineering, optical instrument engineering is impressive,” admitted Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

The commissioner on science and technology of the African Union is expected to visit Belarus soon. The official is expected to discuss the development of bilateral cooperation with the Belarusian side, including personnel training, joint scientific projects, and the establishment of enterprises to make medications.
