Belarus signs additional protocol to CoE Criminal Law Convention on Corruption

MINSK, 23 January (BelTA) - Belarus signed an additional protocol to the Council of Europe’s Criminal Law Convention on Corruption. The signing ceremony took place at the headquarters of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg (France), BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry. On behalf of Belarus, the document was signed by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to France Pavel Latushko.

The press service noted that the signing of the protocol has become another step aimed to intensify interaction of Belarus with foreign partners in the fight against corruption, and to involve the expertise of the Council of Europe to further improve the anti-corruption activities of Belarusian law-enforcement agencies.

Accession to the additional protocol is an important step to continue constructive cooperation within the framework of the Group of States Against Corruption (GRECO) of the Council of Europe. Belarus became its full member in 2012 after ratifying the CoE criminal and civil law conventions on corruption, the press service said.

In 2013, Belarus conducted systematic work to analyze and fulfill the recommendations of GRECO which it issued in 2012 after the experts of the group conducted an evaluation of the situation in the fight against corruption in the country. Belarus’ final report on the implementation of the recommendations was sent to the GRECO Secretariat in December 2013.

After the signing ceremony, Ambassador Pavel Latushko and CoE Deputy Secretary General Mrs Battaini-Dragoni discussed the current state and prospects of development of relations between Belarus and the Council of Europe.
