Belarus president wants 12 faulty bridges reconstructed soon

LIDA DISTRICT, 17 April (BelTA) – It is necessary to restore 12 faulty bridges on major motorways soon. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko gave the relevant instruction as he visited OAO Neman Glassworks on 17 April, BelTA has learned.

The head of state was informed about the implementation of the project to reconstruct the M6 Minsk-Grodno motorway and about prospects of development of road infrastructure. Belarusian contractors of the holding company Belavtodor took care of modernizing the M6 motorway. The number of people working on the motorway peaked at 1,100, with up 550 vehicles and machines in use. It took 2.5 years to reconstruct the main 154km-long section of the motorway without closing it to traffic. The project cost $219 million.

Thanks to the reconstruction of the M6 motorway and the construction of a motorway between Warsaw and Bialystok in Poland an alternative corridor for transportation between the East and the West is now available. It is possible to reach Warsaw via Brest by driving for 553km or via Grodno by driving for 546km. Apart from that, the border checkpoint Bruzgi has been reconstructed. That and the reconstructed motorway have considerably improved the transit appeal of Belarus.

There are plans to start major modernization of the M7 motorway to Vilnius, build a bridge across the Zapadny Bug River in Domachevo (on parity terms with Poland), and reconstruct 12 top-priority bridges this year.

The head of state emphasized the bridges need to be modernized fast. “It is even more important than the fight against the coronavirus. People should be hyped about the bridges. We have to restore all these bridges within a short period of time,” he said. “It is necessary to start working on a large scale.” According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, these projects can use a considerable number of specialists and construction workers in order to keep people busy in the current complicated economic situation.

The construction of a new road from Minsk to Smolevichi was mentioned as well. Once the road between Minsk and Smolevichi is ready, the construction should continue to extend the road to Borisov. “It seems you will not have to stop here. Make plans to build the road all the way to Borisov right away,” the president noted.

Aleksandr Lukashenko also pointed out it is necessary to frugally spend money in the course of road reconstruction. It is necessary to design them wisely, without excessive details while maintaining high quality of the road surface.
