Belarus president in favor of broader cooperation with Ukraine in defense industry

BARANOVICHI, 2 April (BelTA) – It is necessary to expand cooperation with Ukraine in defense industry matters. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko made the statement as he visited OAO 558 Aircraft Repair Plant in Baranovichi on 2 April, BelTA has learned.

“Ukraine is virtually destroyed at present but the defense industry there is respectable, including the things that interest you. Let’s try to come to terms with Ukrainians and work together to prevent the loss of intellectual and engineering centers, designers in Ukraine. The time is as good as any,” said Alexander Lukashenko.

“Europeans and other ones are also interested in working with us these days,” said the President.

“Therefore, we should exploit the moment not only for ourselves but also for foreign markets and the Russian Federation,” added the Belarusian leader.

In particular, the Belarusian head of state mentioned the possibility of advancing cooperation with the Ukrainian company Motor Sich, which owns a package of shares of Orsha Aircraft Repair Plant. “It is not a problem for the Orsha-based company to make a helicopter if they use a Motor Sich engine,” said the President. “Once you get an engine, you can buy two or three complicated pieces of equipment that we don’t have to make on our own. The rest can be easily made, the body can be made”.
