Belarus plays leading role in international efforts to combat trafficking in people

MINSK, 21 June (BelTA) - Belarus plays a leading role in international efforts to combat trafficking in persons, noted the participants of the Belarus-initiated event “Combating trafficking in persons for the purpose of sexual exploitation through victim-centered approaches” held during the 38th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The event was organized by the Permanent Mission of Belarus to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva in conjunction with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, and the international non-governmental organization Equality Now.

The panel discussion was attended by one of the victims of sexual trafficking from South Africa who now heads the international non-governmental organization Survivor Exit Foundation. The participants discussed various aspects of combating trafficking in human beings from the point of view of universal international, regional and non-governmental organizations.

Belarus’ presentation was dedicated to combating trafficking in human beings in the context of the Belarusian resolution on this issue adopted the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention in May 2018. The participants in the meeting noted the leading role of Belarus in international efforts to combat trafficking in human beings, expressed the hope to strengthen it in the future.
