Belarus looks forward to closer cooperation with UN in human rights

Рhoto by MFA of BelarusMINSK, 17 October (BelTA) - Belarus looks forward to increased cooperation with the United Nations in human rights, Andrei Taranda, Deputy Director of Global Policy and Humanitarian Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, said during the Interactive Dialogue with the High Commissioner for Human Rights at the Third Committee as part of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly, BelTA has learned.

“The Belarusian diplomat underlined the important role that the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) plays in technical cooperation for strengthening national capacity. He informed the participants of the results of the OHCHR technical mission's visit to Belarus. He welcomed the long-lasting and fruitful cooperation between Belarus and the OHCHR in the field of combating trafficking in persons and expressed hope for expansion of such cooperation in other areas of human rights issues,” the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed.

Andrei Taranda called on the OHCHR to expand project activities to provide international technical assistance to Belarus with the implementation of the country’s first national human rights plan. The Belarusian diplomat noted that the monitoring function of the OHCHR will have a practical effect only if it is impartial and non-political. In this context, he called to rely more on such mechanisms as thematic special procedures, Human Rights treaty bodies and Human Rights Council Universal Periodic Review.
