Belarus, Latvia confirm plans to expand ties

MINSK, 28 February (BelTA) – Belarus and Latvia have confirmed their readiness to keep expanding the bilateral cooperation in all the fields. The matter was discussed at the meeting of Belarus’ Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei with Latvian President Andris Berzins on 27 February, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry.

Vladimir Makei and Andris Berzins discussed the state and prospects of Belarus-Latvia cooperation in politics, trade, economy and the humanitarian field. The talks were held during a working visit of Vladimir Makei to Latvia on 27-28 February.

On the same day Vladimir Makei held talks with Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics. The foreign ministers had an in-depth discussion of the bilateral dialogue and Belarus-EU relations as Latvia is gearing up to assume the EU presidency in H1 2015 and to host the Eastern Partnership Summit. They also discussed pros and cons of revising the EaP format and development of mutually beneficial projects for the Riga Summit. They shared their views on the international agenda, including the situation in Ukraine.

Belarus’ Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei met with Latvia’s Minister of Transport Anrijs Matiss and Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Transport Uldis Reimanis to discuss ways to intensify cooperation in the field of transportation, logistics, communications, IT, as well as implementation of joint infrastructure projects aimed at better use of the transit potential of the two countries.

During his stay in Riga Vladimir Makei visited OOO MTZ Service and met with the company’s top managers to discuss the state of things with the sales and assembly of Belarusian machinery in Latvia and ways to resolve the issues related to the promotion of the machinery on the Latvian market.

The Belarusian Foreign Minister also toured the Freeport of Riga and met with Leonid Loginov, the port’s manager. Vladimir Makei and Leonid Loginov discussed Belarus-Latvia cooperation in transportation and transit and a possibility to expand cooperation with the port.
