Belarus, Laos parliaments ink cooperation agreement

MINSK, 21 April (BelTA) – An agreement on cooperation between the parliaments of Belarus and Laos was signed in Minsk on 21 April as part of the visit of the Laos parliament delegation, BelTA has learned.

On behalf of Belarus the document was signed by Speaker of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Anatoly Rubinov. On behalf of Laos the document was signed by head of the Laos parliament delegation Pany Yathotou. Apart from that, a document on the exchange of ratification instruments concerning the fulfillment of intrastate procedures specified by the agreement on friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries was signed on 21 April.

Anatoly Rubinov remarked that the Belarusian side considers the visit as an important step for bolstering Belarus-Laos cooperation. “Our countries have a lot in common both in domestic politics and with regard to international commitments,” he said. “Belarus believes cooperation with Laos is very important for our politics in Southeastern Asia,” stressed the Speaker.

Anatoly Rubinov drew attention to the fact that Belarus-Laos diplomatic relations were established 20 years ago but the visit of the Laos president to Belarus in 2013 was the best impetus to the advancement of Belarus-Laos cooperation. Negotiations between the presidents of Belarus and Laos took place during the visit. Various kinds of agreements were reached.

In turn, Pany Yathotou thanked the Belarusian side for the invitation and the warm welcome. She was confident that after the documents are signed, cooperation between the two countries will become more concrete.

The Laos parliament delegation will stay in Belarus till 25 April. While in Belarus members of the delegation are expected to meet with Prime Minister of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich and visit ZAO Atlant. The guests are expected to visit Grodno Oblast to meet with representatives of the Karelichi District administration.

A working group on cooperation with the Laos parliament has been set up in the Belarus parliament. The two countries maintain a dialogue within the framework of international parliamentary organizations. For instance, Laotian MPs backed the Belarus parliament’s application for observer status in the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly. The dialogue between Belarusian and Laotian MPs is expected to continue within the framework of the forthcoming 35th General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly. The event is scheduled to take place in Vientiane, Laos on 14-20 September 2014.
