Belarus, Iran to sign memorandum of cooperation in sport

MINSK, 30 August (BelTA) – Belarus and Iran plan to sign a memorandum of cooperation in physical education and sport. The matter was discussed during a working meeting of Belarus’ Sport and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Iran to Belarus Mostafa Oveisi, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Sport and Tourism Ministry.

The parties considered the prospects of cooperation between the two countries in sport and tourism, outlined the main areas of joint work. Sergei Kovalchuk stressed that the number of joint events needs to be expanded and all the initiatives need to be included into the ministerial memorandum of cooperation in physical education and sport. The parties discussed the mechanism of signing the document at the meeting.

According to Sergei Kovalchuk, Belarusian and Iranian athletes cooperate successfully in many sports, with wrestling remaining a favorite. Achievements of Belarusian well-known wrestler Alexander Medved have influenced the existing traditions greatly.

The countries have been developing ties between sports federations. The Ambassador is in contact with the heads of many federations. Iranian athletes and coaches in football, wrestling, karate, boxing come to Belarus to share best practices. Belarusian athletes participate in sports forums in Iran.

Tourism remains an important focus of interaction. Mostafa Oveisi expects the inclusion of Iran in a list of countries whose citizens are allowed to visit Belarus without visas. He is convinced that Belarusian nature, culture and history will be interested to Iranian tourists.
