Belarus-initiated resolution on fight against illegal organ trade adopted in Vienna

MINSK, 19 May (BelTA) – Belarus-initiated resolution on the prevention and fight against illegal organ trade and human trafficking for the purpose of organ sale has been adopted in Vienna. The document was approved at the 23rd session of the UN Committee on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, BelTA learnt from the Belarusian embassy in Austria.

The resolution for the first time within the commission draws the attention of the international community to the need to analyze the present situation and modern trends in organ trade as a new looming crime. A wide discussion which took place as part of the meeting on the draft resolution confirmed the importance and topicality of the issue raised by the Republic of Belarus. The Belarusian initiative was supported by a number of the states that face the problem of trafficking in human organs. The Belarusian resolution was co-sponsored by Russia, the United States, Venezuela, Salvador, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Sudan.

In accordance with the resolution the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime will work together with other competent international organizations to collect and analyze the data on organ trafficking. The results of this work will be reflected in the relevant report. Thus, the adoption of the resolution was an important step towards the development and improvement of the relevant international and national instruments to regular this type of medical activity in order to prevent its illegal use.
