Belarus hosts IAEA Integrated Regulatory Review Service mission

MINSK, 3 October (BelTA) – Belarus is hosting a mission of the IAEA Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) for the first time, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry.

“The IAEA Integrated Regulatory Review Service started its mission in Belarus on 2 October. More than 20 experts led by Petteri Tiippana, Director General of the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK), will spend two weeks in Belarus evaluating different aspects of the regulatory infrastructure and interviewing representatives of Belarusian government agencies and the supervised organizations. Their work will be based on Belarus’ self-evaluation report that has been submitted to the IAEA,” the press service said.

The experts will inspect the construction site of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP), visit the Joint Institute for Power and Nuclear Research – Sosny of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the enterprises Isotope Technologies and Ekores, and the Belarusian Clinical Hospital for Medical Rehabilitation.

The IRRS mission will run through 14 October.

The IAEA Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) missions evaluate the compliance of regulatory activities with the IAEA safety standards in order to enhance the effectiveness of the national regulatory infrastructure of the IAEA member states. IRRS missions are conducted by a team of international experts led by a senior regulatory expert from an IAEA member state. The experts identify areas for further improvement and help the host country draft a plan of action to eliminate the detected shortcomings. They also identify good practices that can provide a basis for reviewing the IAEA safety standards.
