Belarus Healthcare Minister attending World Health Assembly in Geneva

MINSK, 22 May (BelTA) – An official delegation of the Belarusian Healthcare Ministry led by Minister Valery Malashko is taking part in the 70th World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland on 22-31 May, BelTA learned from the ministry's press service.

The session is discussing the ways of improving the healthcare system with a view to promoting the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. It is expected that Valery Malashko will speak at the plenary session on the development of more efficient health systems in the age of sustainable development.

The Belarusian delegation will also hold working meetings with heads of foreign delegations, including Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Qatar, Iraq and also international organizations.

The member states will elect a new Director-General, who will take office for a five-year term on 1 July 2017. The three nominees for the position, Dr David Nabarro of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Dr Sania Nishtar of Pakistan, and Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus of Ethiopia, have advanced to the second round of the election.

The World Health Assembly is the decision-making body of WHO.
