Belarus considers integrating general and economic courts

MINSK, 19 November (BelTA) – There are plans to establish a single system of courts of general jurisdiction that will include general and economic courts. The system will be supervised by the Supreme Court, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said at a meeting to discuss improvement of operation of courts and institutions of justice on 19 November, BelTA has learnt.

The head of state underlined that upon his instruction the Belarus President Administration, a task force led by Deputy Head of the Belarus President Administration Valery Mitskevich and interested government agencies have studied ways to improve the court system and put forward some important suggestions.

The President emphasized that courts will not be just technically integrated, but a single system of courts of general jurisdiction will be established preferably on a new basis.

The new judicial system might assume functions related to organizational matters, maintenance and procurement, and human resources. Bailiffs might be brought together into a single agency that will be set up at the Justice Ministry. There are a number of other proposals. The President emphasized that before making decisions he would like to hear out an objective evaluation of these proposals. “I would like to hear all reasons for and against the integration of general and economic courts, work out a mechanism to address other matters closely related to this transformation,” Alexander Lukashenko said.
