Belarus, China sign roadmap for regional cooperation

MINSK, 21 September (BelTA) – The Economy Ministry of Belarus and the Ministry of Commerce of China held the second meeting of the Belarusian-Chinese working group on interregional trade and economic cooperation as part of the China-Eurasia Expo in Urumqi, the capital city of China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, BelTA learnt from the website of the Belarusian Economy Ministry.

Partaking in the meeting were representatives of six Belarusian oblasts and nine Chinese regions. Representatives of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region were invited as well.

According to Belarusian Economy Minister Vladimir Zinovsky, Belarus attached much importance to the meeting of the working group since it took place ahead of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko’s state visit to China. “The two heads of state outlined regional cooperation as the main mechanism to promote and develop trade, economic and investment cooperation between the countries and emphasized the need to strengthen direct dialogue between the regions. We hope the authorities of the Chinese provinces and cities will provide assistance in strengthening the existing relations and establishing new interregional bilateral ties. The Belarusian government bodies will provide all necessary assistance to the local executive bodies to make this cooperation maximally efficient,” the minister noted.

In his words, to generate concrete results the development of the interregional cooperation should rely on the principle of shifting from quantity to quality. This means that the participating states should take a well-balanced approach to the implementation of joint initiatives and the selection of projects.

During the meeting the parties discussed the implementation of joint projects and signed a roadmap to strengthen the Chinese-Belarusian interregional trade and economic cooperation. The document includes more than 30 joint projects.

A memorandum of cooperation was signed between Gomel Oblast and China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The parties agreed to twin and work out concrete projects during the forthcoming visit of representatives of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in Belarus and the organization of a large-scale exhibition of the goods of China’s western provinces in November.

The next meeting of the Belarusian-Chinese working group on interregional trade and economic cooperation will take place in Belarus in 2017.

20 September was the first day of the fifth China-Eurasia Expo. The official opening of the Belarusian national pavilion took place on the same day. Partaking in the business briefing entitled as Belarus – A Nodal Point of the Silk Road Economic Belt. Investments and Tourism featured were representatives of more than 200 Chinese companies.

On 20 September the official Belarusian delegation led by Deputy Head of the Belarus President Administration Nikolai Snopkov held talks with China’s Vice Minister of Commerce Wang Shouwen.
