Belarus, Azerbaijan to improve legal framework of bilateral relations

MINSK, 6 October (BelTA) - Belarus and Azerbaijan have agreed to improve the legal framework of cooperation, Belarus Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei told journalists after his meeting with Azerbaijan Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov on 6 October, BelTA has learned.

“During the negotiations we discussed ways to improve the legal framework that forms the basis for our bilateral cooperation. We agreed to formulate a number of ideas and present them to the Belarus-Azerbaijan intergovernmental commission that will meet in November 2014,” the Belarusian Foreign Minister explained.

Vladimir Makei said that the sides discussed the possibility to organize a visit of the President of Azerbaijan to Belarus next year. “The date of the visit will be decided on through the diplomatic channels taking into account the working schedules of the presidents,” he added.

The minister noted that the cooperation between Belarus and Azerbaijan is of strategic nature, and the mutually beneficial ties are rapidly developing. “We discussed our cooperation in the international arena. There are no problems or differences between Belarus and Azerbaijan. We support each other in the international organizations. We made concrete agreements on our cooperation within international organizations,” Vladimir Makei emphasized.

Speaking about the trade and economic ties, the Belarusian Foreign Minister noted that they have been increasingly vibrant. Last year the trade in goods between the countries reached almost $300 million. “Today the Belarusian President discussed ways to increase the volume of trade. It was noted that the potential of the trade and economic cooperation has not been fully exploited. This is why our aim is to increase the figure at least twice. The cooperation is developing. This year we have observed a 26% growth, and I think this trend will remain in place,” Vladimir Makei said.

Elmar Mammadyarov said that Belarus and Azerbaijan do not use the potential and opportunities for economic cooperation in full. “There are many economic aspects we can work on. For example, Belarusian companies can develop cooperation in the field of power engineering. The agreement to start the construction of the Southern Gas Corridor has been recently signed in Azerbaijan. The project provides for heavy investments, which opens great opportunities for the countries we have friendly relations with,” the head of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said.
