Belarus attends UN Women Executive Board session

MINSK, 30 August (BelTA) - Charge d'Affaires of Belarus to the United Nations Irina Velichko participated in the second regular session of the UN Women Executive Board which is running at the UN headquarters in New York on 29-30 August, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The Belarusian diplomat made a number of proposals to a new UN Women Strategic Plan 2018-2021. With a view to enhancing the women's economic empowerment Irina Velichko suggested encouraging female entrepreneurship as one of the most effective ways to improve women's access to decent work and to decrease the income gap between men and women,” the ministry said.

The Belarusian diplomat noted that the UN Women should play a more visible role at the country level not only in the countries-recipients but also in the countries that achieved significant results in gender promotion. This will facilitate the exchange of successful experience in this matter.

Irina Velichko also informed the participants of the meeting that Belarus presented the Voluntary National Review on the progress in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development earlier in July this year. Irina Velichko emphasized that the report also focused on the gender equality issues.

Irina Velichko also called for active participation of the UN Women high ranking representatives in national initiatives and drew the attention of the international community to the regional conference on SDGs with the participation of national coordinators to be held in Belarus in 2018.
