Accredited foreign diplomats can monitor local elections in Belarus

MINSK, 12 March (BelTA) – Foreign diplomats accredited in Belarus will be able to monitor the elections to the local councils of deputies and the repeat parliamentary elections at Gomel-Novobelitsky constituency No. 36, BelTA learnt from the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus.

The CEC noted that only accredited foreign diplomats will be able to monitor the forthcoming elections in Belarus. Other foreign observers will not be invited, because it is not required by the international obligations of Belarus.

According to the Central Election Commission, representatives of diplomatic missions of the United Kingdom, China and the United States announced their intension to monitor the elections.

Foreign observers will be able to monitor the local elections in Belarus from 18 March, when the early voting will start, up to the election day on 23 March, after precinct commissions will calculate the votes.

Foreign observers will be allowed to attend sessions of election commissions, watch the distribution of ballot papers, the course of the voting process, get information about the vote counting, etc.

Over 9,600 national observers have been accredited by the CEC. NGOs account for the bulk of them with over 8,200 representatives.

At present election campaigning is in progress in Belarus. It will conclude on 22 March.
