MINSK, 21 January (BelTA) – As of 20 January the election commissions accredited 253 observers for the elections to the local councils of deputies of the twenty-seventh convocation, BelTA learnt from the Central Election Commission (CEC).
Most observers, namely 150, are representatives of public associations, including Belaya Rus, the BRSM Youth Union, the Belarusian Union of Women, the Federation of Trade Unions, Belarusian Association of Veterans. Thirteen observers represent political parties, including the Communist Party of Belarus and the United Civil Party.
78 observers have been accredited through applications from citizens. Labor groups sent 12 people to monitor the elections.
As reported, Belarus has established the institute of mandatory accreditation for national observers. This novelty applies to the recent campaign to elect members of local councils.
Belarus is not planning to invite foreign observers to local elections as the country’s international commitments do not imply this.
