22,700 people nominated as local election candidates in Belarus

MINSK, 12 February (BelTA) – Some 22,700 people seek to compete for a seat in the local councils of deputies of Belarus, Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina has said in an interview with the First National Channel of the Belarusian Radio, BelTA has learnt.

The nomination of candidates concluded on 10 February. 22,700 candidates want to run for 18,800 seats in the local councils of deputies, Lidia Yermoshina informed.

The registration of candidates is in progress in Belarus now. It will finish on 20 February.

Signature collection was the most popular form of nomination. This option was used by 62.5% of nominees. “All the necessary conditions were created for that. Signature collection by means of picketing, which was pretty popular during the presidential election, was used in very few cases this time because of the weather conditions. The nomination took place in January-February,” Lidia Yermoshina said.

Some 30% of candidates were put forward by labor collectives. “Labor collectives in the countryside, in small towns, are the major providers of deputies,” Lidia Yermoshina said.

About 3% of candidates were nominated by political parties, Lidia Yermoshina added. She noted that the party nominees submitted the necessary documents very close to the deadline.
