Google, Amazon, Netflix get registered to pay digital VAT in Belarus

MINSK, 18 January (BelTA) – Google, Amazon, and Netflix have been registered with the tax service in Belarus in order to pay VAT on digital services (the so-called Google tax), BelTA learned from Belarusian Tax and Duties Minister Sergei Nalivaiko as Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov visited the Zavodskoy District tax office of the Tax and Duties Ministry in Minsk on 18 January.

The Belarusian tax service started taking registration applications from foreign providers of digital services after 1 January 2018. The list now includes six companies, including Google, Amazon, Netflix, and LinkedIn. Uber and other companies are expected to be added to the list soon.

Sergei Nalivaiko reminded that amendments to the Tax Code with a view to taxing foreign digital services were prepared back in 2016 and came into force on 1 January 2018. This is why the companies had time to prepare for the new rules. “We see that serious companies treat the novelties in a responsible manner. Although they can get registered till the end of the quarter, they are doing it now, in advance,” said Sergei Nalivaiko.

The first payments are expected to arrive in April, with the deadline set on 22 April. Taxpayers are supposed to get registered with the tax service by the end of the quarter, in which the taxable activities and assets appear. So if a Belarusian buys a service in January 2018, then the provider has to get registered with the Belarusian tax service by 31 March 2018. Such services are subject to 20% VAT rate.

BelTA reported earlier that the Belarusian Tax and Duties Ministry intends to earn about $4 million from the so-called Google tax in 2018.
